In many places in Switzerland, the summer of 2022 turned out to be the sunniest and hottest since records began in 1886. The images of dry riverbeds are not something we want to get used to. The tremendous heat, however, had no warming effect on the frosty relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU). One consequence of this frigid state of affairs is the unwelcome isolation that Swiss research is currently experiencing with regard to Europe. We explain the fallout from this in the latest “Swiss Review”. On the one hand, we have sweltering heat, and on the other a looming ice age. In view of such extremes, we wish you the golden mean – a mild autumn for those of you in the northern hemisphere, and a balmy spring if you’re down below the equator.
