In 1878, writer Mark Twain ascended the Rigi, that picturesque mountain overlooking Lake Lucerne. He and his companion got a boy to carry their belongings up to the top. On the way up, they were accosted by yodellers. After giving the first yodeller one franc, they quickly tired of the renditions “…and during the remainder of the day hired the rest of the jodelers, at a franc apiece, not to jodel any more.” If Twain were in Switzerland today, I would introduce him to Dayana Pfammatter, who has blazed a trail as the first-ever person to have completed a master’s degree – at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – with yodelling as the main subject. Pfammatter now teaches yodelling to others – and requests for her services are coming in thick and fast. I am sure she would be more than happy to give the American adventurer a few tips.
